PIRATES!

Ahoy there you land lovers! Pirates have invaded our class. I'm sure you are wondering what pirates have to do with kindergarten! Well...more than you know!

Mr. Nicaise shared with us his favorite children's book How I became a Pirate by Melinda Long. She also write other pirate books like Pirates don't change diapers. He brought in a display board that showed many different books that she had written. Kindergartners are very smart and know ALL about authors and illustrators.

Mr. Nicaise talked to us about the "Pirate Code." This is a set of rules that pirates live by. We worked together to write our own Pirate Code and reviewed the rules in our classroom and school.

We learned that each pirate ship has their own flag that represents who they are. So, we each chose something to put on our flag and we also added all the letters we have learned.

We read many books about pirates, some where fiction (make believe) and some were non-fiction, these were true pirate stories!

On Friday, we all dressed up like pirates (including Mr. Nicaise) we had eye patches, bandanas, hats and even a hook for a hand. Then, we went on a treasure hunt. We had to use the map to find the treasure. We had to remember our directions (left, right, above, behind, etc.), we counted how many paces to each landmark, and at the end...the treasure was ours!
